Today’s generation is eating more cheese but drinking less milk, per USDA:

  • There’s been a 121% increase in per capita cheese consumption between 1975-2022
  • There’s been a 47% decline in per capita milk consumption during the same period

The decline in milk consumption coincides with the boom in alternative milk—almond, soy, and oat. Some consumers are switching over for nutritional reasons (lower in fat and calories, less sugar, etc.), while others might choose to drink alternative milk for ethical reasons (prevent cow suffering, climate change, etc.).

Meanwhile, non-dairy cheese hasn’t found similar success to alternative milks. Americans also view cheese as an “affordable indulgence” that can bring joy and a way to liven up a meal or snacking routine.
